What are Otoacoustic Emissions?

Edgecliff Hearing audiologists are skilled at testing and rehabilitating hearing of all ages. We have the latest Otoacoustic Emissions technology that is particularly suitable for testing ear function for babies below the age of 6 months.

Otoacoustic emissions are sounds given off by the inner ear when the cochlea is stimulated by a sound. When sound stimulates the cochlea, the outer hair cells vibrate. The vibration produces a nearly inaudible sound that echoes back into the middle ear.

Children aged 0-6 months cannot be reliably tested with behavioural means, therefore otoacoustic emissions are a non-invasive way to test cochlea function. Otoacoustic emissions can also complement behavioural testing in patients 6 months and older.
