COCHLEAR IMPLANTS
If you have lost hearing in one ear, or you are not obtaining enough benefit from hearing aids, then a cochlear implant may be a good solution for you.
The cochlear implant is designed to replace the lost function of the inner ear (the cochlea). There are four brands of cochlear implants in Australia:
- Cochlear Ltd
- Med El
- Advanced Bionics
- Oticon Medical
Edgecliff Hearing audiologists are experts at cochlear implant audiology and can help you decide whether a cochlear implant is an option for you to improve your hearing. We have worked with cochlear implants for decades and have helped hundreds of people to regain hearing. Below is a recording of one of our patients and a video of how the cochlear implant works.
While the majority of people suffer from hearing loss may be helped with hearing aids, for some, hearing aids do not provide the sufficient benefit.
If you suffer from hearing loss and find it difficult to use the phone or listen to TV, even with hearing aids, a cochlear implant may help reconnect you to the hearing world. Over 250,000 people worldwide now have benefited from a cochlear implant.
Edgecliff Hearing patient Jason George speaks about how he lost his hearing, experienced Tinnitus and how a cochlear implant gave him his hearing back.
Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound, a cochlear implant bypasses the damaged part of the ear and stimulates the hearing nerve directly.
Here is how the cochlear implant works…
BONE CONDUCTION IMPLANTS
If you have lost hearing in one ear (single-sided deafness), or have a permanent conductive hearing loss with normal inner ear hearing (or only mild hearing loss), then a bone conduction implant may be an option to improve your overall hearing.
Unlike the cochlear implant, the bone-conduction implant complements your natural inner ear hearing by bypassing the conductive hearing loss – or sending sound to the other ear (in the case of single-sided deafness). There are three brands of bone-conduction implants in Australia:
- Cochlear Ltd
- Med El
- Oticon Medical
Edgecliff Hearing audiologists can assess your unique situation and let you know if a bone conduction implant is an option for you to improve your hearing. We can also arrange a trial of bone conduction device (worn on a headband), which gives you a very good idea of what the benefit will be.

VIBRANT SOUNDBRIDGE IMPLANT
If you are unable to wear a hearing aid have aidable inner ear hearing, then a Vibrant Soundbridge implant may be a good option for you to consider. The Vibrant Soundbridge is a near totally implantable hearing aid.
Like the bone-conduction implant, the Vibrant Soundbridge is designed to complement your natural hearing.
There is one supplier of the Vibrant Soundbridge in Australia:
- Med El
